Gabion Wall Basket Geotextile Installation Method Statement SWMS

This guideline outlines the specifications for gabion wall baskets or mattress installation work to ensure the soil’s stability for all kinds of installation like pipe and landscaping works, etc.

If multiple activities are scheduled, the general contractor is to check the importance of the work and plan the proper period to permit each task to finish their respective scope of work.

Before any work begins, supervisors must conduct a risk evaluation of all relevant work areas.

All hazards discovered during the assessment of hazards must be dealt with before starting the civil work.

Set up the following tools and equipment before beginning the wire basket assembly process:

  • Welding machine
  • Wire galvanized assemblies
  • Connectors and wire ties
  • Gravel
  • Standard Safety Equipment (gloves, goggles, safety helmet, etc.)

Foundation Preparation for Gabion Wall Installation

The foundation on which gabions are to be erected should be filled or cut and graded according to levels and lines depicted on the plans.

Uneven surfaces, decomposing materials or vegetation, and any foreign matter must be removed from the foundation surface area.

It should be composed of substances that meet specifications if fill is required.

Gabion baskets and specified bedding or specified geotextiles should not be installed until the foundation has been prepared and the subgrade surface has been approved and inspected through the engineer’s representative.

The comminution of filter or bedding materials is required according to the specifications and plans.

The finished material must be graded as well as free from mounds.

It is important to take extra care when preparing foundations to create an even and smooth surface.

Geotextile should be installed according to the specifications of the specifications and plans.

Gabions Placement Procedure

Set the gabions in place on the foundation, and connect the gabions adjacent to each other along the top, bottom, and vertical edges with the lacing wire or in spiral form.

The wire should be wrapped using alternate double and single half-hitches, spacing them between 100 mm to 150 mm.

Spiral fasteners are widely used to join and interconnect gabions.

Spirals are screwed on the edges connecting them, and Then each one of them is crimped to hold it to the ground.

Lacing can be utilized as an additional method to enhance the interconnection of gabions made of mesh and for the closure of lids.

Connect every layer of gabions with the layer beneath across the front, back, and sides.

Make sure to move the vertical joints between gabions of the rows adjacent to each layer at least by one-half of the cell’s length.

Filling of Gabion Baskets

After the adjacent wire gabion units have been set to line and grade, with the common sides connected, they will be positioned in straight-line tension to achieve a uniform line of alignment.

The gabions could be staked. This can be performed to ensure the alignment is established before placing the rock.

Connecting a lacing cable or other types of fasteners (as permitted) should be used during the filling process to maintain the strength and form that the structure takes.

Cross-tile wires for connecting to the internal wiring must be installed in each gabion cell that is not restricted and greater than 500mm in height, including a temporarily unrestrained gabion cell.

Two wires connecting to the inside must be positioned concurrently with the rock at every 300-millimeter depth spacing.

In gabions made of welded mesh, the stiffeners or crossties will be placed along the edges of gabions (300 millimeters far from corners) for diagonal bracing.

Lacing wire or wire stiffeners that are preformed can be employed.

The gabions should be cautiously filled with rock using with or without, making sure that the gabions are aligned, without bulges, and creating a dense mass that reduces the number of voids.

Slope reinforced with gabions. Interesting arrangement of the park space with the use of gabions.

Unsuitable soil should be removed from the area, and the base soil must be filled, excavated, and leveled according to the designer’s specifications.

Large sharp items i.e. stumps, rocks, or any other construction materials that may cause damage to the geotextile, must be cleared from the location.

Only use the geotextile that has been approved.

Geotextile should be removed manually over the soil.

Be careful when unrolling to avoid wrinkles as well as to avoid damage to the geotextile.

Create a connection using geotextiles that overlap each sheet mounted on another.

In curved areas of mounting (e.g. street corners), Geotextile installation must be in line with the curvature’s path.

If the geotextile has been installed in direct sunlight, you should apply the black geotextile.
